Rilton Cup
R.Fontaine of France won the Rilton Cup scoring 7.5 points out of 9 half a point ahead of V.Kotronias (Greece), D.Howell (England) and the Swedish players E.Berg and J.Furhoff. The best of the Russian players E.Gleizerov took the 6th place with 6.5 points. R.Barhudarian of Saint Petersburg scored 5 points. In the Open tournament Dina Bazhenova of Saint Petersburg performed well scoring 6.5 points out of 9 - only half a point less than the winners.

Hastings Tournament
The traditional festival in Hastings has finished. In the Masters tournament M.Gagunashvili and V.Neverov scored 7 points. V.Ikonnikov, Z.Gofshtein M.Pavlovic, N.Pert, B.Lalic and A.Cherniaev scored 6.5 points.

The ACP World Cup in Odessa
Four matches of the 1/8 finals are were played on Friday. First Leko defeated Sokolov 1.5-0.5, then Rublevsky defeated Naiditsch 1.5-0.5. In the third pair Shirov beat Smirin with the same score and in the fourth match Gelfand beat Nakamura 2-0. On Saturday another four quarterfinalists will be determined.

The opening ceremony of the World Cup, which was attended by the FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov, ended with a drawing of lots. The website of the ACP World Cup is launched!
The Association of Chess Professionals (ACP) and the Bank Pivdennyi are glad to announce that the official website of the 1st ACP World Cup was launched on 3rd January 2007. The website's address is: http://worldcup.pivdenny.com/en The tournament, which is organised by the Bank Pivdennyi, will take place in the Londonskaya Hotel, Odessa, Ukraine from 4-8 January 2007. Among the sixteen participants there will be four players of the world’s Top Ten as well as other stars. The highest rated players of Ukraine, Hungary, Spain, France, Israel and other countries will play in Odessa. The event will be attended by the President of the World Chess Federation Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. The world-famous Grandmaster Viktor Korchnoi from Switzerland will act as the official commentator.

In memory of N.A.Novotelnov (1911-2006)
The International Master, the 1947 RSFSR Champion Nikolai Aleksandrovich Novotelnov who had celebrated his 95th birthday in December died two days before the New Year. We present our condolences to his family and friends.
