ANNA SHLAKICH SENSATIONALLY WINS IN RUDENKO MEMORIAL!
St.Petersburg schoolgirl Anna Shlakich (born in 1991) sensationally won the Rudenko Memorial, scoring 7 points in 9 games. Marina Lupik, student of the St. Petersburg State University, took the second place. Elizaveta Bronnikova from Izhevsk finished third. Two students of FINEC also collected 6.5 points - Valentina Soloviova took the 4th place, and Varvara Kirillova became 5th. Only Soloviova has the WIM title among the winners. 4 grandmasters and 10 international masters participated in the tournament.

SVIDLER DEFEATED CARLSEN ON SPITZBERGEN
Peter Svidler defeated Magnus Carlsen in an exhibition match that was played in Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Spitzbergen (Svalbard), Norway. The score is 1.5-0.5. In the first game the Petersburger was on a Black side of the Ruy Lopez. He won a pawn, but the game ended in a draw in an endgame with opposite-colored bishops. In the second game Peter sacrificed a bishop and a rook to get a mating attack against Carlsen's Sicilian. The prodigy gave up a queen for a piece, which did not help his hopeless position. The game ended on move 31 in Svidler's favor.

Odessa chess cruise
Vassily Ivanchuk won the rapid tournament with 10/11. Vyacheslav Eingorn finished second with 8 points, Yury Drozdovsky was third with 7 points, followed by Mikhail Golubev 6.5, Rafael Vaganian and Semyon Palatnik - both 5.5, Natalia Zhukova and Stanislav Savchenko - both 5, Konstantin Lerner 4.5, Vladimir Tukmakov 4, Nona Gaprindashvili 3, Maria Klinova 2. All players but Ivanchuk, Vaganian and Gaprindashvili are present or former residents of Odessa. Vaganian had won the USSR championship held in Odessa in 1989.

The Russian Higher League starts today in Tomsk. It is a 9-round Swiss with 7 best players qualifying for the Superfinal. Malakhov, Najer and Zvjaginsev are the top seed. St. Petersburg is represented by Evgeny Alekseev (#9, 2644), Konstantin Sakaev (#10, 2642), Alexander Khalifman (#14, 2622), Valery Popov (#24, 2578), Denis Yevseev (#25, 2572), Nikita Vitiugov (#29, 2555), Sergey Ionov (#44, 2517), Vassily Yemelin (#45, 2516) and Pavel Anisimov (#46, 2515). Svalbard chess festival
Chess players come closer and closer to the North Pole in their search of sponsors. Svalbard, Norway hosts a two-day chess festival with participation of Carlsen, Agdestein (both Norway), Svidler (Russia) and de Firmian (USA). The grandmasters will play exhibition games and give simuls. There will also be a match between Russian and Norwegian mining companies.

Peter Leko won the third game of the match, deviating from his usual 1.e4 is favor of 1.d4. The fourth game ended in a draw. After two days of competition, Leko leads 2.5-1.5.
