II Festival 'Villa Cañada de Calatrava' including rapid chess, Fischer chess and blitz tournaments will be held April 6-8 in Ciudad Real (Spain). The overall prize fund is 120,000 Euros. Top players are: 12th world champion A.Karpov, world number one V.Anand (2786), Sh.Mamedyarov (2757), B.Gelfand (2733), V.Ivanchuk (2729), J.Polgar (2727), A.Grischuk (2717), E.Bacrot (2709), 286 participants altogether. Grischuk and Mamedyarov were the winners in rapid chess last year, Shakhriyar sharing success in all three nominations.

Russian boys and girls' championships in five groups from U10 to U18 begin today in Dagomys (Sochi). St. Petersburg has over 60 representatives both in Higher and First League. 403 men and 150 women started yesterday in continental chess championships in Dresden. Chessplayers of 43 countries are participating, including 66 from Russia (12 percent) and 147 German habitants (27 percent). Among them there are 184 GMs and 72 WGMs. Unfortunately, announced Elo-favourite V.Ivanchuk has not arrived. The results of St. Petersburg representatives in the starting round: A.Khalifman, N.Vitiugov, V.Popov, V.Epishin, and E.Ovod won their games, K.Sakaev, E.Korbut, and Iu.Gromova drew, I.Sudakova lost. The 2nd round starts today at 15:00 CET (17:00 Moscow time).

Individual European championships will start tomorrow in Dresden (Germany) ending April 16. According to organizers, 580 players are registered including 88 (!) from Russia. 11 rounds will be played, time control 90 m /40 moves + 30 m + 30 s/move. The top seed is Vassily Ivanchuk (2750), GMs Alexander Khalifman, Konstantin Sakaev, Nikita Vitiugov and Valerij Popov of St. Petersburg are to play, as well as Ekaterina Korbut, Evgenija Ovod, Irina Sudakova and Iulia Gromova in the women's section. Previous man champions of Europe were Pavel Tregubov (2000), Emil Sutovsky (2001), Bartlomej Maceja (2002), Zurab Azmaiparashvili (2003), Vassily Ivanchuk (2004), Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (2005) and Zdenko Kozul (2006).

FM Roman Lovkov (2429) won the main event with 7/9, Alexander Shustrov was the winner of the amateur tournament with 7,5.
